About
I read a biography of Robert Kennedy one summer during my high school years (yeah, a long time ago). This quote has stuck with me ever since:
“There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why… I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”
Robert Francis Kennedy - U.S. attorney general and adviser, 1925 -1968
I suppose this sums up my philosophy perfectly. I’ve been asking ‘why not’ a lot lately. Friends and family are frankly sick of hearing me. So I decided that the time was ripe to take a stand. Each of us has, in some way - big or small - had an impact on the planet. It will take each of us consciously committing to make a change to lessen that impact on the planet. It doesn’t have to be painful. It can even be fun or challenging or profitable. We will all benefit, our home - our planet - will benefit. It is our responsibility after all.
So please read on. I will post my successes AND my failures. I hope to hear from you about the same. We can all make a difference, one person at a time.
A Note From Tom
I won’t start with a quote, as I’m nowhere near as thoughtful as Hope.
Every once in a while, you’ll see notes from me, myerman. I’m a techie, so I’m going to spend a lot of time looking at “techie” issues — technology, science, the so-called green-collar or clean tech jobs that will spring up from nowhere once we elect a new president. Ha, ha.
So, here’s what I’m not. I’m not a tree-hugger. I look with a cynical eye askance to any enviro-scheme that isn’t practical, profitable, and linked in some way to making this a better country (ie, a country that doesn’t depend for its fuel on a bunch of oil that we get from the most unstable regions of the world). At the same time, I’m not some kind of industry lapdog. I look forward to taking some people to task–the carmakers, the presidential candidates, and any one else who has jumped on the environmental bandwagon.
It’s going to be fun.
